Locksmiths in Marrakech, vetted and on call

Marrakech is the city where the door itself is most likely to be the complication. A riad's entrance is often old, heavy, solid wood, sometimes with a lock that predates any standard, and behind an address a vehicle cannot reach.

Three consequences worth knowing before you call:

• Give the nearest derb, gate or landmark, not just a street name. A locksmith on foot in the Medina at night with a wrong address is a wasted call-out you will still be charged for.
• An old wooden door is not always drillable — and should not be. On a heritage door, forcing the lock can destroy joinery worth far more than the lock. Say on the phone that it is a riad door, so the right person comes with the right tools.
• Replacement parts for antique locks are not standard. The honest outcome is sometimes a modern lock fitted discreetly alongside, rather than a like-for-like replacement that does not exist.

Outside the walls the problem inverts. Villas in the Palmeraie, Targa, Amelkis and along the Route de l'Ourika have gates, long boundary walls and secondary entrances — and the failure that actually strands people is the gate motor, not the front door.

Gate repair and motorisation runs 800 to 4,000 MAD. Two things reduce how often you need it: ask for the manual release to be shown to you and to your staff at installation, and have the mechanism serviced before the summer rather than after it fails. Dust and heat are what kill these, and both peak at the same time.

Distance is a real cost factor here. A Palmeraie or Ourika-road address is a genuinely longer trip than a Gueliz flat, and a night call-out to one is priced accordingly — 300 to 900 MAD on top. Ask for it on the phone.

If you own or manage a property let to guests in Marrakech, your key situation degrades on its own. Keys are copied for cleaners, handed to caretakers, lost by guests and replaced quietly. After two seasons nobody knows how many exist.

Two fixes, and they are not the same. A high-security cylinder with a registered key card, 700 to 1,500 MAD, means no copy can be cut without the card — good for an owner's private door or a store room. A keypad or smart lock, 600 to 2,500 MAD fitted, means codes change between guests and there is no key to lose at all — better for the guest entrance itself.

For a property changing guests weekly, the keypad pays for itself within a season in avoided lockouts alone.

Get three things before anyone is dispatched: the call-out fee and whether it comes off the job, a price range for your actual situation, and any night or weekend surcharge. A competent locksmith quotes a band from a description; only the exact figure needs the door in front of them.

And the rule that saves the most: a slammed door should not be drilled. If it merely closed behind you and the deadbolt is not thrown, it opens without destroying anything — 150 to 400 MAD rather than 300 to 700 plus a new cylinder. Ask, before work starts, whether the opening will be non-destructive.
