01Agree the price on the phone. Every time.

Agree the price on the phone. Every time.

The recurring bad experience in this city is not a broken door — it is a figure that triples between the phone call and the invoice, negotiated with someone already standing outside your flat at midnight.

Three things, before anyone is dispatched: the call-out fee and whether it is deducted from the job; a price range for your actual situation; and any night, weekend or holiday surcharge. A competent locksmith gives a range from a description. Refusal to give one tells you what you need to know.

And the rule that saves the most money: a slammed door should not be drilled. If the door simply closed behind you and the deadbolt is not thrown, it opens without destroying the lock. A drill on a slammed door means either a lack of skill or a cylinder replacement being sold to you at 250 MAD you did not need. Ask before work starts.

02Casablanca's doors: what you are likely to have

Casablanca's doors: what you are likely to have

The city's building stock splits into three, and each has a typical failure.

Older buildings in the centre, Gauthier and Bourgogne often keep original mortise locks. They are repairable and replacement bodies are available, but the fit is not standard — expect a longer visit, and expect the honest answer to sometimes be a full lock replacement at 300 to 800 MAD rather than a cylinder swap.

Newer apartments in Maarif, Sidi Maarouf, Oulfa and Californie almost always run a Euro-profile cylinder. That is the easy case: a change is 180 to 500 MAD fitted, twenty minutes, and no damage.

Villas in Anfa, Ain Diab and Californie add gates and secondary entrances. Gate motor work runs 800 to 4,000 MAD, and it is worth scoping alongside a lock job rather than as a separate emergency six months later.

Coastal humidity is a genuine factor near Ain Diab and the corniche. A key that has become progressively harder to turn over months is usually a cylinder corroding, not a key wearing out — and it is far cheaper to change before it seizes with you outside.

03New tenants: change the cylinder in the first week

New tenants: change the cylinder in the first week

If you have just moved into a flat in Casablanca, assume copies of your key exist — previous tenants, the agency, the caretaker, a cleaner from two tenancies ago. That is not paranoia, it is just how keys accumulate.

The fix is a cylinder change, not a new door: 180 to 500 MAD standard, or 400 to 1,000 MAD for a high-security cylinder with a registered key card, which prevents copies being cut without the card. For a flat where you have no idea how many keys are in circulation, the card version is the one that actually solves the problem.

Do it in the first week. It costs less than every alternative and it closes the question permanently.

04After a break-in

After a break-in

Police report first — insurers require it, and changing the door before it is documented complicates the claim. Then secure the door.

Ask the locksmith which of two things happened. If the lock was defeated, a high-security cylinder is the answer, 400 to 1,000 MAD. If the frame gave way, a new cylinder achieves nothing at all and door reinforcement is the real fix, 3,500 to 8,000 MAD supplied and fitted in Casablanca.

A reinforcement quoted without an explanation of how the door was actually breached is a sale, not a diagnosis. A good locksmith will show you the point of failure.

Questions

What people ask us most.

How much does a locksmith cost in Casablanca?+

Opening a slammed door with a standard cylinder is 150 to 350 MAD; a reinforced door, 400 to 900 MAD. A cylinder change is 180 to 400 MAD fitted, or 400 to 1,000 MAD for a high-security cylinder with a key card. Night call-outs add 300 to 800 MAD, quoted on the phone rather than on the invoice.

I'm locked out in Casablanca at night. What should I ask on the phone?+

The call-out fee and whether it comes off the job, a price range for your specific situation, and the night surcharge. Also ask whether they intend to open the door without drilling — if it only slammed shut and the deadbolt is not thrown, it should not need to be drilled.

My key has become hard to turn. Is that urgent?+

Near the coast — Ain Diab, the corniche, Anfa — a key that has grown progressively stiffer over months usually means the cylinder is corroding, not that the key is worn. Changing it costs 180 to 400 MAD now, against a call-out plus a cylinder plus your evening when it finally seizes with you outside.

I've just moved into a flat in Maarif. Should I change the lock?+

Change the cylinder, not the lock — 180 to 400 MAD on a modern Euro-profile door, twenty minutes, no damage. If you want to be certain no copies can be cut, a high-security cylinder with a registered key card is 400 to 1,000 MAD. Do it in the first week.

Do you cover villas with gates?+

Yes. Gate motor repair and installation runs 800 to 4,000 MAD in Anfa, Ain Diab and Californie. If you are already having lock work done, scope the gate in the same visit rather than leaving it for a separate emergency later.
